Inverness is one of
the busiest and most attractive shopping centres in
Scotland. The Highland Capital combines its market town traditions
with its contemporary reputation as a retail centre par excellence.
Indeed, in recent years, the retail sector in Inverness has grown at such
a tremendous rate - making it one of the most sought after retail
locations in the UK - that shoppers can now find everything and
anything.
THE CITY CENTRE
Inverness High Street and Victorian
Market provide contrasting shopping experiences for visitors and
residents alike. Many top chain stores can be found in the city centre and
the nearby Eastgate Centre, while a wide range of specialist
retailers are found in and around the market.
The superb selection of products on display throughout the city includes
outdoor clothes and equipment, knitwear, books, music
and crafts. Of course, many local shops also sell traditional
Highland goods including food and drink products, kilts and
other traditional garments, jewellery, ornaments and
local artwork.
- The High Street is always busy,
interesting and welcoming. It is pedestrianised to provide a
safe shopping experience for all the family and its many
award-winning floral displays ensure a lot of summer colour. The
High Street boasts chain stores and local retailers and
a wide range of bars, restaurants and coffee shops.
Street entertainers are usually on hand to add to the buzz.
- The Victorian Market is a
covered arcade which links four of the city's busiest streets. The
market is a great place to wander - take your time to discover
everything from specialist jewellers and Highland fashions
to traditional merchants such as fishmongers and butchers.
- The Eastgate Centre is the
city's flagship retail centre and home to national chain stores
such as Marks and Spencer, Next, C&A and Boots.
The top floor of the centre has a large animated clock - great fun for
kids when it strikes the hour - and there is also a three-storey
car park to make visiting as easy as possible.
RETAIL CENTRES AND PARKS
For visitors and locals alike the
traditional shopping experience of Inverness city centre is now
complemented by several excellent retail parks. The biggest and
most recent addition is the Inverness Retail and Business Park.
Others include Inshes Retail Park on the southern edge of the city
and Telford Retail Park which is west of the river. Furthermore,
given the buoyant state of the city's retail sector, additional
developments are expected to bring more stores to the city in the early
years of the 21st century.
